10 Simple steps to declutter your closet

If you’ve ever stared blankly into your closet looking for an outfit, only wondering why you don’t like any of the 185 items hanging on your closet rod, then you need to figure out how to declutter your closet…fast!

The absolute best way to keep your closet organized is to simplify your wardrobe. Yeah! I know that’s easier said than done.lol...

For some reason, we grow attached to our clothes and find it difficult to make decisions about them objectively. We keep clothes that look old and worn out because those are our favorite items to wear. But we also keep clothes that are brand spankin’ new because they don’t fit, we don’t have anything to wear with them, or we hope that we’ll have an event to wear them to one day. Clothes in both of those categories take up valuable space in our closet and do absolutely nothing for our style.

Instead, we should only keep clothing items that make us look amazing! Toss the rest. How to declutter your closet

The first key when decluttering your closet quickly is to get in the right frame of mind. When you are finally sick and tired of looking at your wall-to-wall closet full of clothes and wondering why you have “nothing to wear,”  then you’re ready to declutter your closet.

One by one, pick up an article of clothing and ask yourself if that fits into any of the following categories. If they do, let those clothes go so you can treat the outfits you love with the care they deserve.

1. Clothes that make you uncomfortable.

If you’re always tugging at your pants and pulling your shirt, that piece of clothing doesn’t fit properly.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried on an outfit on that looks great while I’m standing still at the store. But after I get home it’s a completely different story.
Sometimes clothes look great in the dressing room and also the first time you wear them. But after their first wash and dry, their entire structure changes.

Whatever the reason, clothes that make you feel uncomfortable need to go.

2. Clothes that are too tight.

Sometimes you keep too tight fitting clothes with high hopes that you can wear them again if you lose weight.

But why?

Letting a dress or a pair of pants hang on the hanger untouched occupies prime closet real estate! That space could be used for clothes that makes you feel great and look stylish…right NOW!

You’ll lose that weight again. But when the inches come off, a new outfit might be just the reward you need.

3. Clothes that are too big.

Okay, so you lost weight. Hurray! It’s the perfect time to get rid of those big clothes pleaaase!

Do not make the excuse that you might gain a few pounds in the future and need to keep them “just in case.” Keeping clothes that are too big for you makes no sense (unless of course you see yourself gaining that weight again, and I’m sure you wouldn’t like that). So give them up and wear clothes that look amazing on your new figure.

4. Clothes that still have tags.

Have you ever found a great deal on a top and bought it because only because it was on clearance or really cheap?

Or have you gone on a super quick shopping spree without trying those clothes on first? Only realizing after the return period was over that they didn’t fit quite right?

It happens. Granted, its totally. annoying when it does. But we can always give it out as a gift or donate it to charity.

Whatever the reason, using precious space in your closet to keep “new” clothes just because you bought it isn’t a good enough reason to keep it.

5. Clothes that don’t have a “match”.

Do you have a clothing item in your closet that you would love to wear, but can’t because you don’t have a coordinating piece or matching top or pants? If so, keep a running list of items you need to make an outfit complete. The next time you’re ready to update your wardrobe, you’ll be armed with a strategic shopping list.

If it’s not worth the wait, then it’s time to let it go and let someone else find the match.Give it out!

6. Clothes that are all the same color.

Just because you think black is slimming (that’s rarely true by the way) doesn’t mean you need wall-to-wall black shirts and pants. Get rid of the duplicate or look-alike clothing items and add a little color to the mix.

Be adventurous! Don’t play safe and settle with what you’re used to or because that’s your favorite color. Try to mix and match for a change, and you will be surprised with the results. Putting together has some great ideas to get your style ideas flowing.

7. Clothes that are worn out.

Sometimes you don’t realize that a clothing item is worn out until you try on something that actually fits.  Analyze the clothing items you wear most often and determine if they have lost their shape. If so, toss them out and start wearing some of those clothes that have been sitting in your closet untouched.

8. Clothes that you don’t/won’t/will never wear.

You know those pieces that you always try on at home, but never seem to use when you’re actually getting dressed? Odds are, you’ll never wear them at all, so why are you still hanging on to them? It is much better to use the space in your closet for things you’ll actually reach for regularly. Always remember that if you have clothes in your closet you haven’t worn in 3-6 months – or you haven’t worn at all – then you probably aren’t going to wear them.

To easily find out what clothes you don’t wear, tie a ribbon around one end clothes rod. As you wear, wash, and replace those items back in your closet, put them on the other side of the ribbon. You’ll quickly see what you wear and don’t wear.

9. Clothes from special events.

Do you have an old bridesmaid dress sitting in your closet?after the wedding its a complete bore!

It can seem weird to buy an outfit, wear it once, and immediately get rid of it. But that’s often the best thing to do!

Keeping clothes that would never-ever-ever wear again, just because they were for a special event, just takes up space in your closet.

If you systematically look through your closet for clothing items in these nine categories, you can make a big dent in decluttering your closet. It might be tough. It will definitely take some willpower. But it will be completely worth it in the end when you have room in your closet for clothes that make you look and feel amazing. Its a newyear! Its time to make changes! Happy Decluttering!!
